How to Reset MS Word to Default Values

After using Microsoft Word for many years, you may find that the program no longer runs the way it did when it was first installed. The default settings for one or more features might be different after clicking the wrong thing or moving things around by accident. Uninstalling and reinstalling Word doesn't help because those preferences are saved on your computer.

Follow these Steps to Reset Word to it's Default Values. (Caution: These Steps involve Editing the Registry)

1. Open File Explorer and set VIEW to show Hidden Files and File Name Extensions

2. Navigate to C:\users\ your User Name \ AppData \ Roaming \ Microsoft \ Templates

3. Rename Normal.dotm to Normal.old. Close File Explorer.

4. Open the Registry and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER / SOFTWARE / MICROSOFT / OFFICE

5. Double-Click the Correct Folder for your version of Word: {16.0 for newer version} {15.0 for Word 1013} {14.0 for Word 2010}

6. In that folder - DELETE the WORD Folder.

7. Close the Registry and restart Word. It should now be at Default settings.
